Digital grab Bag
To help our trips run smoothly and safely, we use a specific set of digital tools. For the safety of the group and transparency of costs, using these apps is a requirement for all participants.
Please ensure you have these downloaded and your accounts set up prior to the trip.
SIGNAL CHAT
Purpose: Primary coordination and emergency communication. Signal is our "command center." We use it for real-time updates, meeting point changes, and safety check-ins.
Unlike standard SMS, it works over Wi-Fi (essential for international trips) and provides end-to-end encryption to keep our community's data private.
Download Signal and ensure your notifications are turned on during trip days.
SPLITWISE
Purpose: Full transparency for shared group expenses. Whether it’s a group dinner or shared fuel, we log everything in Splitwise. This ensures everyone can see exactly where the money goes in real-time.
Note: Splitwise is for tracking only. It is not a payment platform. Once a trip concludes, we use the final balance to settle up via bank transfer.
Get Splitwise and ensure you’re added to the Trip’s Group.
SLOPES
Purpose: Shared mapping and location tracking. The mountains are big, and it’s easy to get separated. Slopes allows us to see each other’s live location on a digital trail map. It also tracks your vertical feet, speed, and distance for the day.
Note: There is a small cost for a premium pass to access the interactive maps and live tracking features, which we consider a vital safety tool for our groups. Link in with trip-members and organise a Slopes Family to reduce the cost.
BONUS: WISE TRAVEL MONEY CARD
Purpose: Travel money and secure digital spending. While not strictly required, we highly recommend a Wise card—especially for our Japan and NZ trips.
It offers the best exchange rates and allows you to "spin up" disposable digital credit cards. These are great for booking local services online without exposing your primary bank details.
